There's still a steep learning curve to cruiser survival at Tier 8 and you'll be instantly punished for your mistakes. Therefore, don't expect to start seal clubbing when you get an Atago. Especially when you want to make a turn because an accidental broadside to an enemy paying attention will cost you a lot. You have to be aware of your environment and who's shooting what. Despite having decent armor, the IJN cruisers sport the biggest citadel surfaces in the game and the Atago is not an exception. The second weakness is inherent to the IJN cruisers and it's their huge citadels. You also lose 3 turrets to rotation instead of 2 while swinging your guns to the other side. If you're shooting while angling, it doesn't like to fire at all just like the Hipper's infamous third turret. The rear-looking third turret is very annoying to use. However, the Atago is not without weaknesses.
With some luck they might even show you the broadside you've been waiting for. You can launch your torps by swinging to the either side slightly and force your opponent to maneuver. Which sometimes forces you to inevitably close range. Though they give you a good advantage when you're angling against a dangerous opponent. The angles of the launchers also don't overlap much, so you can't launch 8 torps with quick succession unlike the other IJN cruisers.
Don't expect to become a pesudo IJN DD with forward looking launchers. Yes you do get more torpedo hits, but it's mostly nothing compared to your gun damage overall. I'm speaking to dead ears though, US BB brawlers are balanced and the BB brawler style is great now.Despite better angles, I found the torpedoes to be pretty unreliable damage dealers on the Atago. NO SHIP SHOULD BE ABLE TO SIT UNDER 7K TO A BB AND SURVIVE LONGER THAN A FEW SECONDS.
We are slower and less mobile Thanumber IJN counterpart and in that, we are basically easy targets for lesser ships to close range and stomp us. All American BB's should have dominant secondaries to other nations. They don't die u less I kill them with my main guns. I regularly have multiple DDs camp under 7k of me, with full secondary upgrades except the 15th point accuracy talent. Even then it puts no advantage to the US BB line because IJN can use the same talent. WG won't fix it unless you take the 15 point talent. This is why American BB knife style players have bad stats and wonder why they die a lot. This is why all BB players cry when a DD finds them and sits under 5k range, while secondaries do absolutely nothing. This is why 99% of BB players sit back and snipe at max range and watch their team die. This has been a MAJOR problem for BB players like myself a while now.
